The LG Electronics–KAIST 6G Research Center, inaugurated on January 28, 2019, has conducted continuous industry–academia collaborative research on sixth-generation (6G) communication technologies over the past six years. Based primarily at the KI IT-AI Convergence Research Institute, the center has worked closely with affiliated faculty laboratories across the campus to advance a wide range of core 6G technologies.
Its major research areas include the development of fundamental technologies for terahertz-band wireless transceivers, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), next-generation channel coding, spectrum-sharing-based wireless access, optical wireless communication, and invisible antenna technologies. Through these efforts, the center has proactively developed enabling technologies for the 6G era, expected to unfold from 2030 onward, contributing to addressing industry demands and fostering new growth engines.
In addition, the center has served as a platform for industry–academia–research collaboration by establishing a mutual memorandum of understanding (MoU) among KAIST, LG Electronics, the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), and Keysight. Since 2022, it has hosted the annual “6G Grand Summit.” In 2025, the event expanded its scope beyond 6G to include Physical AI, quantum technologies, and space, evolving into the “Future 2030 Summit,” which provides a forum for knowledge exchange among domestic experts. The fundamental technologies of 6G are expected to play critical roles as core infrastructure for future industries such as Physical AI and space, contributing significantly to technological leadership.
