KPC4IR’S AI for Social Good Project on AI in Maternal Health now working directly with government agencies

The research project on AI for social good aimed at using AI and Digital technologies to transform maternal healthcare in Bangladesh has recently entered a new phase by working directly with the country’s government agencies. The UNESCAP-APRU-Goolge.org-funded Project aims to strengthen AI Capabilities and Governing Frameworks in Asia and the Pacific. As part of this project, KAIST KPC4IR is collaborating with NUS IPUR to support and accelerate the use of AI in medicine and healthcare in Bangladesh. The expert team is focusing i research and analysis on identifying crucial bottlenecks and gaps that impede the beneficial use of AI. These efforts are aimed at providing the Bangladesh Government with the technological and policy tools to address challenges in Pregnancy Monitoring & health care systems using Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies.

Since the kickoff of the AI for Social Good project last year, KAIST KPC4IR and IPUR have made tremendous progress in data collection, analysis, and presentation of preliminary findings to stakeholders, including the Bangladesh government.

Currently, the latest stage of the project will see the team present some of the key insights to government agencies in Bangladesh. Through this project, it is hoped that some of the recommendations and insights will provide a solid basis for policy formulation and the creation of enabling environments for AI and digital technologies to be used in supporting maternal healthcare systems and promoting AI capabilities in Bangladesh.

A small team from KAIST and IPUR will be traveling to Bangladesh in May 2023 to present its findings to Bangladesh government agencies including Bangladesh’s Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Programme of the ICT Division and Cabinet Division of Bangladesh, Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Tech entrepreneurs among others.

The project is funded and facilitated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), and Google.org as part of the “AI for Social Good” multi-stakeholder network. The network supports policymakers by developing insights on what capabilities and governance frameworks will be most supportive for leveraging AI effectively for social good.
